Iron Maiden, 1975 yılında Londra'da kurulmuş bir İngiliz heavy metal grubudur. Heavy Metal müziğinin ve bir alt dalı olan New Wave Of British Heavy Metal'in öncülerindendir. Grubun bugüne kadarki toplam albüm satışı kesin olarak bilinmemekle birlikte bu sayı 70 milyonun üzerindedir.[1][2] Iron Maiden müzik kanalı MTV'nin "tüm zamanların en iyi heavy metal grupları" listesinde dördüncü sırada yeralmıştır.

Kuruluş yılları (1975-1978) [değiştir]
Iron Maiden, Steve Harris tarafından 1975'in Noel günü kuruldu. İlk kadro basta Steve Harris, gitarlarda Dave Sullivan ve Terry Rance, davulda Ron Matthews ve vokalde de Paul Day'den oluşuyordu. Harris grubuna o sıralar seyrettiği Demir Maskeli Adam adlı filmin de etkisiyle orta çağda kullanılan bir işkence aletinin adını (Türkçe:Demir Bakire) vermişti.[4] Sonradan grubun ilk iki albümünde yeralacak olan "Iron Maiden", "Wrathchild", "Prowler", "Transylvania" ve "Purgatory" (o dönemdeki adıyla "Floating") gibi şarkıların ilk versiyonları bu dönemde Steve Harris tarafından yazılmışsa da başlangıçta grubun repertuarının büyük bölümü Free, Thin Lizzy, Tucky Buzzard gibi grupların şarkılarından oluşuyordu.[5] Iron Maiden ilk konserini 1 Mayıs 1976 günü Londra'nın doğusundaki Poplar semtinde bir salonda verdi.[6]
Grup kişisel ve müzikal farklılıklardan ötürü uzun süre istikrarlı bir kadroya kavuşamadı. Kadrodaki ilk değişiklik 1976'da sahnede yeterince enerjik ve kendinden emin durmadığı gerekçesiyle solist Paul Day'in gruptan gönderilmesiyle yaşandı ve yerine Harris'in eski grubu Smiler'dan ayrılmış olan Dennis Wilcock geldi. Steve Harris, Dennis Wilcock'un tavsiyesiyle gruba üçüncü bir gitarist olarak Dave Murray'i dahil etmek istedi ancak bu durum grubun diğer iki gitaristi Dave Sullivan ve Tarry Rance tarafından hoş karşılanmadı. Sonunda Dave Murray grubun tek gitaristi olarak kadrodaki yerini aldı.[7] 1977'de gruba ikinci gitarist olarak o dönemde Bob Angelo sahne adını kullanan Bob Sawyer katıldı.[8] Ancak Dave Murray ile geçinemeyen yeni gitarist Murray'nin solist Wilcock ile arasının açılmasına neden oldu ve sonunda her iki gitarist de gruptan kovuldu.[9] Çift gitardan vazgeçen Steve Harris gruba bir klavyeci almaya karar vererek kadroya Tony Moore'u kattı. Ardından Ron Matthews'un bir konsere günler kala ayrılması üzerine davulcu Barry Purkis çok kısa bir süreliğine gruba katıldı. Bu kadronun Terry Wrapram'ın da gitarist olarak eşlik ettiği 1977'in Kasım ayında verdiği tek konser son derece başarısız geçince Steve Harris solist Dennis Wilcock dışındaki herkesi gruptan kovdu.[10] Wilcock da çok geçmeden kendi grubunu kurmak için Iron Maiden'dan ayrıldı. Kadroyu yeniden inşa etmek durumunda kalan Steve Harris gitarist olarak en başından beri birinci tercihi olan Dave Murray'i geri çağırdı ve davulcu olarak da Smiler'dan tanıdığı Doug Sampson'ı gruba dahil etti.[11]
Paul Di'Anno dönemi (1978-1981) [değiştir]
1978'in yaz ve sonbahar ayları boyunca sonradan grubun ilk iki albümünde yeralacak parçalar üzerinde çalışan Harris, Murray ve Sampson bir yandan da kalıcı bir solist arayışına girdi. 1978'in sonlarında grup Steve Harris'in bir arkadaşının önerisiyle Paul Di'Anno ile bir deneme provası yaptı ve Di'Anno grubun yeni solisti oldu.[12] Iron Maiden Paul Di'Anno ile ilk konserini Londra'daki Ruskin Arms adlı pub'da verdi.[13] Grup sonraki iki sene boyunca Londra'nın doğusunda artarda verdiği konserlerle hayran kitlesini giderek artırdı.[14] Ancak hâlen revaçta olan punk rock yüzünden plak şirketlerinin temsilcilerinin yeni grupları takip ettiği Londra'nın merkezindeki büyük salonlarda çalma imkânı bulamayan Iron Maiden müziğini daha geniş kitlelere ulaştırmak için bir demo kaydetmeye karar verdi. 200 sterline Cambridge'deki Spaceward stüdyosunu 24 saatliğine kiralayan grup 31 Aralık 1978 günü "Iron Maiden", "Invasion", "Prowler" ve "Strange World" adlı şarkılarından oluşan demoyu kaydetti.[15] Kaydedilen demoyu bir arkadaşı aracılığıyla edinen müzik menajeri Rod Smalwood, Steve Harris'e gruba menajerlik etmek için teklifte bulundu ve Harris de bu teklifi kabul etti. Smallwood büyük plak şirketlerinin dikkatini çekmek için Londra'nın merkezindeki Marquee kulübünde 19 Ekim 1979 günü bir konser ayarladı.[13][16] Konser sonrasında EMI plak şirketi grupla peşin 50.000 sterlin ve ilk üç albümün masrafları karşılığında beş albümlük bir anlaşma yaptı. 1979'un Kasım ayında grup Rock Hard Records adlı kendi bağımsız firmasından Cambridge'de kaydetmiş olduğu demodaki üç şarkıyı The Soundhouse Tapes adıyla EP olarak yayımladı. Postayla satışa sunulan 5.000 kopya birkaç hafta içinde tükendi. Grup EP'nin ikinci basımı için Virgin ve HMV gibi şirketlerden gelen teklifleri reddetti.[17]
1979 yılı boyunca bu gelişmeler yaşanırken grup bir yandan da ikinci bir gitarist arayışındaydı. Sırasıyla Paul Cairns, Paul Todd ve Tony Parsons kısa süreliğine grupta yer aldıysa da hiçbiri kalıcı olamadı.[18] 1979 sonlarında daha sonra grupta yer alacak olan Adrian Smith'e gruba katılması teklif edildi ama grubu Urchin ile yoluna devam etmek isteyen Smith teklifi reddetti. Grubun Melody Maker dergisine verdiği bir ilanı yanıtlayan Dennis Stratton bir deneme provasının ardından ikinci gitarist olarak gruba katıldı.[19] İlk albümün kayıtları öncesinde kadrodaki son değişim grubun yoğun konser trafiğini bünyesi kaldırmadığı için davulcu Doug Sampson'ın gönderilmesiyle yaşandı. Yerine Dennis Stratton'ın arkadaşı ve Samson grubunun eski davulcusu Clive Burr geldi.[13]
Iron Maiden ilk albümün kayıtlarına 1980 yılının Ocak ayında Londra'nın batısındaki Kingsway Stüdyoları'nda başladı. Şubat ayında "Running Free" isimli parça tekli olarak yayımlandı. Şarkının yayımlanmasının ardından aynı ay grup BBC'nin meşhur müzik programı Top of the Pops'ta çıkmak için teklif aldı.[13] Playback yapmayı reddeden grup The Who'nun 1972'deki performansından beri programda canlı çalan ilk grup oldu.[20] Yine Şubat ayında yayımlanan ve dokuz farklı grubun parçalarından oluşan Metal for Muthas isimli bir toplama albümde Iron Maiden "Wrathchild" ve "Sanctuary" adlı şarkılarıyla yer aldı.[21]
İlk albümün kayıt ve miksajının tamamlanmasının ardından grup Mart ayında Judas Priest'in dünya turnesinin Britanya ayağındaki 15 konserde ön grup olarak yer aldı.[22] Nihayet grubun ilk albümü Iron Maiden 11 Nisan 1980 günü piyasaya çıktı ve İngiltere listelerine 4. sıradan girdi. Albüm ilk haftasında 60.000 kopya satarak "gümüş albüm" statüsü kazandı.[13] Albümün ardından grup 45 konserlik ilk büyük Britanya turnesine çıktı. 15 Mayıs'ta başlayan turne 23 Ağustos'ta o dönemde Britanya'daki en büyük açıkhava etkinliği olan Reading Festivali'nde verilen konserle son buldu.[23] Reading Festivali'nin hemen ardından grup bu kez kıta Avrupasına kendini tanıtmak üzere KISS'in Avrupa turnesinde ön grup olarak yer aldı. Ağustos sonundan Ekim ayının ortalarına kadar süren turnede grup dokuz ülkede otuza yakın konser verdi.[24] Turne sırasında diğer grup üyeleri ve menajer Rod Smallwood ile arası giderek açılan Dennis Stratton turnenin ardından gruptan gönderildi.[25] Stratton'ın yerine Adrian Smith geldi.[26] Yeni albümün hazırlıklarından önce Kasım ayının sonlarında Iron Maiden yeni gitarist Adrian Smith ile son bir İngiltere turnesine çıktı.[27] Londra'nın Rainbow salonunda verilen turnenin son konserinde kaydedilen görüntüler 1981'in Mayıs ayında Live at the Rainbow adıyla video kaset olarak yayımlandı.[25]
İkinci albüm Killers'ın hazırlıkları 1980'in Aralık ayında başladı.[28] Grup prodüktör olarak 1992 yılında emekli olana kadar birlikte çalışacakları Martin Birch ile anlaşmıştı.[25] Albüm 9 Şubat 1981'de piyasaya çıktı ve İngiltere listelerine 12. sıradan girdi.[29] Albümün piyasaya çıkmasının ardından grup 17 Şubat günü İngiltere'nin Ipswich şehrinde verdiği konserle sekiz ay sürecek olan ilk dünya turnesine başladı. Avrupa'nın yanı sıra ilk kez gittikleri Japonya, Avustralya ve Kuzey Amerika'yı kapsayan turne sırasında 15 ülkede 126 konser verdiler.[30] Yugoslavya'daki konserleriyle bu ülkede konser veren ilk batılı rock grubu oldular.[31] Turne sırasında solist Paul Di'Anno'nun giderek artan içki ve kokain kullanımı sesini ve konser performansını etkilemeye başlamıştı.[32] Di'Anno'nun sesindeki sorunlar yüzünden Almanya'da beş konser iptal edildi.[33] Grubun gittiği müzikal doğrultudan da memnun olmayan Di'Anno 1981'in Eylül ayında gruptan gönderildi.[34]
Uluslararası başarı (1981-1985) [değiştir]
Grup Paul Di'Anno'dan gruptan gönderilmesinin ardından solist olarak Terry Slesser'ı kadroya dahil etmeyi düşündü. Ancak yapılan deneme provasında Harris'in anlatımıyla Slesser'ın sesi sert parçalara gitmedi. 1981'in Ekim ayında Samson grubundan Bruce Dickinson yeni solist olarak kadroya dahil edildi. Grup Bruce Dickinson ile ilk konserini İtalya'nın Bologna şehrinde 26 Ekim 1981 günü verdi. İtalya'da 4 konser daha veren grup, son olarak 15 Kasım'da Londra'da verdiği bir konserle Killers turnesini tamamladı. Bu konserlerde Dickinson yalnızca sesiyle değil selefi Paul Di'Anno'nun aksine sahnedeki hareketli ve enerjik tavırlarıyla da kendisini ispatladı.[35]
Turnenin ardından Iron Maiden yeni albümün hazırlıklarına başladı. Üç ay içinde albümü tamamlaması gereken grup Londra'daki Hollywood stüdyolarında beste çalışmalarına başladı.[35] Grubun o güne kadar yapmış olduğu tüm besteler ilk iki albümde kullanılmış olduğunda yeni albüm sıfırdan yazılacaktı. Ayrıca Bruce Dickinson eski grubu Samson ile olan sözleşmesinden ötürü 1982'nin Ağustos ayına kadar gruba besteci olarak katkıda bulunamıyordu. Bestelerin tamamlanmasının ardından Londra'da Battery stüdyolarında kayda başlandı.[32] Albümün miksajı devam ederken grup "Run to the Hills" adlı parçayı tekli olarak yayımladı. Şarkı İngiltere listelerinde 7 numaraya kadar yükseldi. Grup 25 Şubat'ta yeni dünya turnesinin Britanya ayağına başladı.[36]
Yeni albüm The Number of the Beast 22 Mart 1982 günü piyasaya çıktı ve İngiltere listelerine 1 numaradan girdi.[37] İlk birkaç ay içerisinde 1 milyonun üzerinde satış yapan albüm neredeyse yayımlandığı bütün ülkelerde ilk 10'a girdi.[36] ABD'de 65 hafta listelerde kalan ve gruba bu ülkedeki ilk altın plağını da kazandıran albüm toplamda iki gümüş, sekiz altın ve iki platin plak kazandı.[38] "Run to the Hills", "The Number of the Beast" ve "Hallowed be thy Name" gibi bugün klasik olmuş, grubun konserlerinin vazgeçilmez şarkılarını içeren albüm Iron Maiden'ı uluslararası boyutta bir grup haline getirdi.[39] Albümün yayımlanmasından yaklaşık bir ay önce başlayan "Beast on the Road" turnesi kapsamında grup 16 ülkede 179 konser verdi. Mayıs ve Ekim ayları arasında ABD'de 38 Special, Scorpions ve Judas Priest'in ön grubu olarak yer alan Iron Maiden 28 Ağustos'ta İngiltere'de düzenlenen Reading Festivali'nde ana grup olarak sahne aldı.[38] Turne sırasında davulcu Clive Burr'ün artan içki tüketimi performansını olumsuz yönde etkilemeye başladı. 1982'nin Aralık ayında Burr gruptan gönderildi. Yerine Fransız Trust grubundan Nicko McBrain geldi.[40]
Grup yeni albümün üzerinde çalışmak üzere Jersey adasında toplandı. Bestelerin tamamlanmasının ardından yeni albüm 1983'ün Ocak ayında Bahamalar'ın başkenti Nassau'daki Compass Point Stüdyolarında kaydedildi. Britanya'da 16 mayıs'ta yayımlanan grubun dördüncü stüdyo albümü Piece of Mind İngiltere listelerine üçüncü sıradan girdi. Albümde yer alan "Flight of Icarus" adlı şarkı grubun tarihinde Amerikan radyolarında en fazla çalınan parçası oldu. Yeni dünya turnesine (World Piece Tour) albümün piyasaya çıkmasından iki hafta önce 2 Mayıs'ta İngiltere'nin Hull şehrinde başlayan Iron Maiden bu turne sırasında ABD'de ilk defa ana grup olarak sahne aldı.[41]
Turnenin ardından grup üyeleri 1984'ün Ocak ayında yeni albümün beste çalışmaları için Guernsey adasında toplandı. Bestelerin tamamlanmasının ardından albümün kaydı yine Bahamalar'daki Compass Point Stüdyolarında yapıldı. Grubun beşinci albümü Powerslave, 1984'ün Eylül ayında yayımlandı ve İngiltere listelerine ikinci sıradan girdi. Albümün kapağında Antik Mısır teması kullanılmıştı.[42] Albümden çıkan iki single "Aces High" ve "2 Minutes to Midnight" büyük başarı elde ettiyse de albümdeki en dikkat çeken parça İngiliz şair Samuel Taylor Coleridge'in aynı adlı şiirinden esinlenilerek yazılan, 13 dakika 45 saniye uzunluğundaki "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" adlı parçaydı.[43]
Albümün ardından Iron Maiden rock tarihinin en uzun ve kapsamlı dünya turnelerinden biri olan World Slavery turnesine çıktı. 1984'ün Ağustos'undan 1985'in Temmuz'una[44] kadar süren turne boyunca grup Polonya, Macaristan gibi dönemin demir perde ülkeleri de dahil olmak üzere 20 küsur ülkede konserler verdi. 11 Ocak 1985 günü Brezilya'da düzenlenen Rock in Rio festivalinde Queen grubundan hemen önce sahne aldı.[42] Turne sırasında grubun Los Angeles ve Londra'da verdiği konserlerin kayıtlarından oluşan Live After Death 1985'in Kasım ayında yayımlandı.[44] Albüm İngiltere'de 2 numaraya kadar yükseldi.
